Re: Soundgarden News Thread
Here we go again...
I still don't feel ready to hear any new stuff by Chris or the band but then again I'll probably never be. My life went downhill since his death anyway and I'm still struggling to get back on track, so dealing with the death of the most important and influential musician in my life is kinda hard on top. I guess I'll want to hear that stuff anyway though

Re: Soundgarden News Thread
Soundgarden (Motorhead, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, MC5, Pat Benatar, others too) were snubbed for the now-meaningless “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”
I mean really... Benatar and Dave Matthews topped the fan vote, with Soundgarden also coming very high... all of these were rebuffed entry. Especially in approbation of Depeche Mode, Notorious BIG and Witney bloody Houston who mean to “rock and roll” what Hulk Hogan means to Cricket...! Of these, zero would typically by adjudged as “rock”.
I see the whole thing as rigged, with a new agenda against hard-rock
A further aspect: who have DM, NB and Houston influenced exactly? With Soundgarden, thousands. Can these bands claim that? A profound dubiety consumes me
The only rock artists to get in this time was T Rex, who on balance deserve it (and I do like them)... and the Doobie Brothers - a band I have no recollection of having heard

Am I overreacting? Perhaps. But I loose a lot of faith for Alice in Chains ever being inducted now...

Among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions should be selected.

Re: Soundgarden News Thread
They'll get in eventually. The real crime is the heavy metal bands like Judas Priest. And just because their not your thing, it doesn't mean Depeche Mode, Biggie, and Whitney Houston weren't an influence in their time and it's actually quite ignorant to say that.
Now, with that said for the RnR Hall of Fame...I question even though Aretha Franklin was inducted in 1987 after they inducted all the 1950's rock n roll groups if an argument is to be made.

Now don't get me wrong, Im not saying that those bands weren't important or influential. I am by no means saying that they were rubbish either.Y2K-kyle wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2024 2:33 am They'll get in eventually. The real crime is the heavy metal bands like Judas Priest. However ... I do object to Depeche/Houston/Big/etc being favoured for the RnR HoF when:
First of all: Thin Lizzy, Priest, MC5, Motorhead were more influential, had a longer lasting influence than those acts -- if you played heavy-rock in the 70s/80s/90s, then the inevitability is that from those bands, you will have drawn guidance
And second: If the institution is named the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" then would you not agree that artists of a more "rock" persuasion, those aforementioned for instance, are better befitting of induction hip-hop (BIG), soul-pop (Houston) or electronic (Depeche)?

Now I am more inclined with what you're saying. I've always felt they should rename/rebrand but they won't do that at this rate. I also don't understand their fan vote, it seems like it doesn't matter or influence on the actual vote.
Re: Soundgarden News Thread
This is the third time Depeche have been up for nomination. After 40 years, and being one of our biggest exports, still selling out huge arena tours and influencing a huge swaith of musicians, i kinda think they deserve it.
Re: Soundgarden News Thread
I feel like I see Depeche Mode more here than anywhere else half the time. And you right they're still going strong.

Re: Soundgarden News Thread
DM are essentially a synth-driven dark pop band but they do qualify as rock, just listen to Violator, Songs of Faith and Devotion or Ultra and tell me otherwise. But yeah, they're not the first band I think of when the term "rock and roll" gets a mention.

Re: Soundgarden News Thread
Old news, but in terms of the dark-wave/Synthpop scene, I'd rather have seen Tears for Fears inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame than DM.
