You're a year older than my dad. My parents had no idea about grunge though, they said because me and my brother came along in the early 90s, they were too busy taking care of us in order to pay attention to the outside world, so when we found out about it in the mid-2000s, we ended up telling them about it, and now they know and like it because of us. My dad would always say he liked what I was playing when I'd play Mother Love Bone on the computer, same with Fathom by Greta. I catch my mom singing Nirvana and Soundgarden songs every once in a while. To think she had never heard of Nirvana. The closest she came to knowing about any of it she said was that she heard about Kurt's death on the news when he died.

My kids say I'm a year older than dirt! When we see stuff on the History channel about ancient Rome, my son asks what it was like to go to high school in a chariot

When I was a kid I asked my parents about Buddy Holly when the movie The Buddy Holly Story came out, and they had no idea who he was. They also were barely aware of the Beatles. They were born in 1930 and were into Big Band music like the Glen Miller Orchestra. My mom has told me about jazz being considered 'the devil's music' :D

I've got 5 kids now, so I'm not really aware of too much music after '93... I keep up on Slash and some of the older bands, but I'm lost on the newer stuff.

Haha, because of the whole me loving grunge thing, I've come to respect older people, probably because I have tons in common with people my parents age and nothing in common with people my age. Oh and the hippie generation is great too, and now I realize the original hippies would be in their 60s and 70s, and keep picturing them as the old people shaking their fists at kids on their lawn saying, "Grow your hair out, you capitalist pigs!", but I'd totally love to hear their stories, like I would love to be in that classroom on that episode of The Simpsons where the teachers strike or something and the one teacher is like all, "Did I ever tell you kids about the 60s?". I hope you've taught your kids of some of the awesome music you know of, because while I do love that my parents are the reason I know of Ozzy and Van Halen and all that, I'd kill to have grown up knowing of Nirvana, or even the more underground ones. I'm basically not aware of anything past '97, though that's by choice, well ok I always try stuff out to see if my generation has stopped sucking because I'd LOVE to get the chance to say my generation rocks, but if it did start rocking I'd like to think if I did have kids and I say heard a great song on the radio, I'd still stop and pay attention, but I know kids can be a handful and that might not happen. Oh I know TONS of great new grunge bands though, so that will have to keep me content until something in the mainstream sounds good, though I also like Cage the Elephant.

Ha, I've only heard that about rock and roll.

On the way to the orthodontist in the early 90s I mentioned something about Jimi Hendrix and my mom was all "I've never heard of him. Thats your generations music. I don't know it."....dear lord I couldn't believe how oblivious my mom seemed. What put it over the top for me was that her best friend at the time told me the story about her and her husband had met two weeks after her hubby saw Hendrix and I guess that was what they talked about. I guess mom wasn't paying attention. Some people really don't give music much thought. I just can't process that though. My dad was always interested in music. The day after my friend and I went to see Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails we go in the backyard and my dad was there and asked "So how was Trent?". We both had no clue who he was talking about. I had only seen one video by Nine Inch Nails before this show. He didn't think much of Nirvana until the unplugged. Until he heard some tunes of of Odelay he said beck was a Loser...and he claimed that White Zombie was his favorite band before anyone in Canada had heard of either Beavis or Butthead.

I was ...2.... ;(
Im so pissed off that I missed the greatest time in music history...
Altho in far and forgotten places in my memory I have some pictures from the videos seen on MTV in my childhood, so when I've started getting into grunge few years ago those sounds and videos seemed familiar to me.
Im so jealous of people who were 15+ in late 80's... the best time to grow up:/

I don't think there ever really was a perfect time to grow up....well location matters just as much...and the people you grow up with. I mean if a great scene is happening millions of miles from you and bands are starting left and right but you have nobody to do that with its just frustrating.... but at the same time it can be cool to have a place to dream of going...dreaming of time travel is a little harder! Its five in the morning so yeah blame the lack of sleep for all my posts this morning!
